The Tape Measure

My Mama and I LOVE Bible Studies! For the last few years, we have given her a gift card to use at Lifeway for birthday’s and Christmas’s. I think I get more excited than she does.. because I know when she’s done, I get it NEXT!

The last study she passed my way was ‘Redeemed’ by Angela Thomas Pharr. She passed it along around the time I turned 39. I immediately dug in.. then it happened…

Angela is this bubbly, blonde, Jesus girl. Her teaching style is chock full of illustrations. I love that because I can easily remember and apply what she is teaching. On this particular video, she took out an ordinary, white paper tape measure. All the ladies reached down under their chairs and found one for themselves. As they unfolded their tapes, she asked them to find their age and tear it off.  She threw that thing over her head and said, “That’s in the past, done.” Then, she asked them to estimate how long they would live. (I chose 80 by the way)  Now, tear off what’s left. So, mentally I had a measurement of 39-80. Angela explained that the purpose of this activity, was to see how much time we had left to fulfill the work Jesus has called us to.

As I sat there, I started to do the math. I had just turned 39, if I live to be 80 then I have 41 years left. Wow.. 20 years ago, I would have said,” 41 years is plenty of time to do what I need to do for Jesus!” But 6 kids and 2 grandgirls has shown me that time runs faster than I do and in a blink, I find 20 years displayed in photo albums.

I made a promise to the Lord that day. I’m going to do everything I can for Him in the next 41 years, give or take. That includes the easy stuff, like singing ‘Faithful, Always Faithful’ to my grandbabies and the hard stuff too, like stepping out into the world and speaking in front of hundreds when you have a lot more sweat on your palms than spit in your mouth.

What about you? Try it… do the math. How many approximate years do you have left to do what the Lord has called you to? Declare today, to go home to glory, tattered and torn for Christ. I promise.. He makes all things new!

Matthew 16:24 ESV

Then Jesus told His disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.”

Till next time!
