“That’s thematic!” Roy said. I just smiled. Jesus is always revealing many of the same things to Roy and I at the same time. He will show us the same Scriptures that we’re meditating on in every song or message we hear. In our time with the Lord, we watch and wait for the Lord to point us in a specific direction with our kids or our sisters and brothers at GBC. When you work with as many different ages as we do, we’re constantly asking the Lord, “How do we lead them in a way that they’ll fall madly in love with You and Your Word?”
We see in First and Second Timothy how Paul loved his ‘true son in the faith’. Paul gives us a heartwarming example in 2 Timothy 1:3a when he said, “Timothy, I thank God for you-” and again in 2 Timothy 1:5, “I remember your genuine faith, for you share the faith that first filled your grandmother Lois and your mother, Eunice. And I know that the same faith continues strong in you.” There was a faith that was passed down generationally with Timothy. I wonder, what did Timothy see in Lois and Eunice that caused him to fall madly in love with Jesus? What was it about Paul’s faith that gave him the desire to take his life and pour it out as an offering to God? (2 Timothy 4:6)
Timothy, true son in the faith, watched, experienced, and learned as Paul locked arms with him. The same holds true for us today. Who has the Lord put in your circle of influence? As you stand in those circles. Lock arms with each one and you’ll find a beautifully woven body of generations. Built on one thing, the Gospel of Christ Jesus.
Paul leaves us with a pattern, one that we must follow closely for the church to be the New Testament Church that Christ shed His blood for on Calvary. We are to,” Hold on to the pattern of wholesome teaching you learned from me (Paul)- a pattern shaped by the faith and love that you have in Christ Jesus. Through the power of the Holy Spirit who lives within us, carefully guard the precious truth that has been entrusted to you.”( 2 Timothy 1:13-14)
Stay tuned for Part Two.
