If you know me very well, you would know that I LOVE coffee!! I like my coffee strong, lightly creamed, and LOTS OF IT!!

In fact, at 6:00 am the alarm sounds and the screen on my phone says, “Get up! Time to talk to Jesus and drink coffee!”

Not long ago, The Pioneer Woman came out with the perfect coffee mug for me. I was walking down the Walmart aisle one day when I saw them! I may or may not have squealed with delight.. Ya’ll these coffee mugs are not your average sized mugs, they are 26 ounce mugs!

However, I am only allowed to have ONE mug of this coffee in the morning. It is my portion and if I go beyond that I begin to feel jittery and not feel so good for the greater part of my day. Again, that is my portion. I know every morning, I only get one.

As I was studying Psalm 16 this morning, I grabbed one of my commentaries written by J. Vernon McGee.

**Sidenote: If you don’t know of Mr. McGee, please Google or YouTube. He is a wonderful, gifted radio speaker to listen to, he has such a witty sense of humor and southern drawl to boot. He went home to be with the Lord in 1988.

I was reading Mr. McGee’s commentary notes on Psalm 16:5-6:

“The LORD is the portion of my inheritance and of my cup: thou maintainest my lot. The lines are fallen unto me in pleasant places; yea, I have a goodly heritage.”

When I read, “The LORD is the portion of my inheritance”, I looked over at that mug of coffee and pondered on what the words portion and cup really mean. Let’s first look at what the difference is between a “portion” and a “cup”.

Our portion is what is given to us. It belongs to us.

Our cup is the part we take.

For example~~ My portion is that 26 ounce mug of coffee. Now.. my cup is the part that I choose to drink.

I have been given a portion of 26 ounces but I can choose how much of that I consume. Do you see?

All of us, as followers of Jesus Christ, have been given a portion. We all have spiritual gifts that was given to us at our birth and we have been given all that we need to live out those gifts for the glory of God.

Let’s transfer this every day life example over to a spiritual example.

The LORD has given me a portion, my spiritual gifts. I am a writer and a teacher of God’s Word. It is my portion. Now, my cup can overflow and run over, if I choose to live in the fullness of my portion. The LORD will never force us to do anything, as we all know, we have free will. But we have been given a portion that will cause our cups to overflow with JOY!! If we aren’t joyful, we must ask ourselves, is it God or us?

Once I grasped this, there was no stopping me. I can take the portion given to me and run wide open! This blog is the platform by which I run in my calling using the spiritual gifts the LORD has given me. I can choose to work hard studying and praying, seeking out what it is that He would have for me to write and teach to you. Or, I can choose to say, “No”, for whatever reason, maybe I feel inadequate, uneducated, or just flat out lazy or selfish, wanting to do what I want to with my life. However, He has equipped me with all that I need to live fully in the portion given to me.

As I am storming 2018 seeking out the LORD’s favor in finding strength and joy, He is revealing to me each day in His Word how to do that. But in my search for strength and joy, I am taking you along with me and sharing how He is revealing that to me. Let us all ask ourselves today if we are living in the fullness of our portion. If our cups are empty then we must ask Him to show us how to live in a place where our cups are overflowing and running over!!

Maybe you don’t know what your spiritual gifts are yet. If not, you can go to http://www.lifeway.com/lwc/files/lwcf_mycs_030526_spiritual_gifts_survey.pdf

If this doesn’t help, you can always do what I did. TRY IT ALL!! I began by assisting a Sunday School teacher in the nursery, I liked that so I went on to teaching the 3-K class. I loved that too, so I went to an older age group and kept climbing till I reached the women in our church. I saw that this was where I thrived and I had a giftedness with them. But first, I had to trust the plan of God. My Pastor helped me to trust the process, to pray and be confident that the LORD would ‘show’ me in time what my gifts were.

This is the point of my longest post ever. We have been given a portion. We can choose how much of that portion we partake in. Let’s take all of that portion in that the LORD has for us until our cups are full to overflowing. I guarantee you that we will never be able to consume our portions in its entirety! We have been given much to use for the glory of our God and I promise you that HE IS WORTHY!

John 15:11 New King James Version (NKJV)
11 “These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full.

The Grasp of Gossip

Happy #truthbetoldtuesday!!! This new hashtag has me ALL EXCITED!!!

Each Tuesday (Lord willing) we will blog about truths in Scripture based off of your questions that we receive through email, Instagram, Facebook, and the prayer room.

SOO!! Based off the title you see here, we are going to tackle the issue of gossip!!! YIKES!! Here are a few things for us to ponder, I’m sure none of you have said anything like this, but just in case:

  • I am just telling you this because I am worried about…
  • It’s not gossip if it’s the truth! (right…)
  • It’s not my fault, when I am at the lunch table, I am stuck in the middle of gossip.
  • I can’t stop! When I hear something, I always have to tell at least one person!
  • Everyone I am around is constantly gossiping, do I walk away from my friends?

Gossip has been a problem for a long time! Paul gives us some spiritual advice on the severity of gossip in Ephesians 4:29-32 when he tells us to let no corrupt word proceed out of our mouths. We are to speak what edifies others and imparts grace to those that are listening. In fact, in verse 30, Paul tells us that it grieves the Holy Spirit of God when we continue in sin. If we are filled with bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, evil speaking, and malice we must realize that it will (does) destroy us (and others) from the inside out.

Now that we know what the Bible says about gossip, how do we stop? The only way to stop is to begin with repentance. We can package gossip to appear like it’s concern but we all know the root is still gossip. Verse 32 tells us to be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving, just as Christ Jesus forgave us.

Tip: You can quietly excuse yourself from the lunch table at work or school when gossip starts. You can even bring up the fact that God is not pleased when we gossip. If you are among a group of friends that have issues with gossip, be the light! The Lord has given you a wonderful place to be a witness.

I have been guilty of gossip and I have also been the one being gossiped about. I have never walked away from either feeling good. Let’s be the light for Christ!

Lord forgive us! Help us to turn from opportunities to gossip and to turn toward kindness and edifying others. Help us to be stronger in 2018 and to be restored to the joy of our salvation! In Jesus Name!

3 Methods for Bible Study #truthbetoldtuesday

Studying the Bible can be overwhelming. In the beginning I asked questions like:

  • Why don’t I understand what I’m reading?
  • How do I find a study method that works for me?
  • How do I know what version of the Bible to use?

All of these questions and more were a daily struggle for me. When I found a study method that worked for me, all three of those questions were answered. I regularly use 3 different methods of study for variety and depth. Try all 3 and see which of them you like best, maybe you will be like me and use them ALL!

  1. The Inductive Study Method
  2. The S.O.A.P Method
  3. The Journal Method

Let’s break it down!

  1. The Inductive Study Method

When I first began the Inductive Study Method I was TOTALLY CONFUSED!!! (Insert old frustration)

But, then I came upon https://gogathergrow.com/2017/03/23/5-ws-approach-to-bible-study/  and it saved my Inductive Study LIFE!

*****When you click on the link, at the bottom of the post, she has a section called RESOURCES. Make sure you print off the Inductive Bible Study Worksheet, there are a couple more free printable items but I only use the worksheet for my studies.

This post will give you all that you need to start the Inductive study!

2. The S.O.A.P Method

The S.O.A.P. Method is the method that I recommend if you are new to Bible Study, it is much like the Inductive Method but is much simpler in the beginning to grasp. You can find it here:

*****I use a Bible Study Binder. It is a 3 inch Binder, I have 2, one for the Old Testament and New Testament, I have a divider for each book of the Bible. I filled them with loose leaf notebook paper and keep all of my study notes and materials in each binder.

3. The Journal Method

This is the most fun method I have ever used! Why?? This is where I can get creative and use my markers and such. I will only use 2-3 verses for this method. If you print off the worksheet below, it is a template to get you started!  I will write my verse in the center and write what I learn from cross-referencing, study Bible notes, etc. in the outside bubbles.

If you have any questions, send me a message. I will post in a few days some pics and how to’s of some of mine! See you soon! Happy Studying!!
